Virginia Beach police are investigating two separate drownings from July 3.

Two Separate Drownings off Shore Dr. in Va. Beach

Two people drowned off the beach at Shore Drive in Virginia Beach on Sunday, some six hours apart.

The first victim was a 12-year-old boy. Virginia Beach Police tell Bay Bulletin that the call came in for the missing boy in the 2800 block of Shore Drive. Police say his family last saw him in the water around 10 a.m.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department, EMS, and the Coast Guard all helped police in a search of the land and water in that area. Sadly, he was found in the water, taken to an ambulance, and pronounced dead.

Police say the 12-year-old was from out of town, visiting Virginia Beach with family for the holiday weekend.

Just blocks away the same afternoon, police launched a second search with the help of the city fire department, EMS, and the Coast Guard. Two different 911 callers had reported a man struggling in the water just after 4 p.m. The search crews looked in the water and on land in the 3400 block of Shore Drive. They found the male victim around 5 p.m. and he, too, was pronounced dead.

Police were not releasing details of that victim’s identity as they were still in the process of notifying his next of kin. Bay Bulletin will update this story with any new details police release.
