Boat of the Week: Mathews Brothers Patriot 29 Offers Deadrise-Inspired Yachting

No matter where your home port might be, anywhere up and down the Chesapeake, there are plenty of new places to explore by day if you have the right boat; a boat designed for the waters of the Bay like the 29 Patriot built by Mathews Brothers in Denton on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This week’s brokerage boat of the week, Georgianna, was built in 2019. Powered by a single Volvo Penta D4-300 diesel engine with a Volvo Duo Prop outdrive, she is quick, nimble and economical to run. The engine has logged a mere 290 hours.

Just as Maine lobster boats inspired Down-East-style picnic boats, the Patriot takes its lines from the tried-and-true Chesapeake deadrise workboat hulls that have faithfully served watermen for more than a century. But above the waterline, her yachtified fit and finish makes the Patriot look as graceful as any fancy New England import.

Georgianna has a comfortable helm station equipped with the full Garmin electronics package: GPS, radar, VHF and autopilot. The helm deck is protected by a fiberglass hard top, with broad windshields and opening side windows. An array of stainless-steel rocket launchers rims the hard top for the convenience of the avid fisherman in your crew.

An expansive settee spans the transom, and a gaily striped sun pad covers the engine box in the center of the cockpit. Gates in the transom on either side of the settee provide access to the dual swim platforms extending aft on either side of the outdrive unit. There’s even a freshwater shower in the cockpit to rinse yourself off after a swim. A hatch in the cockpit sole provides access to the battery array.

The forward cabin features a comfortable V-berth for occasional overnight cruises, a galley counter with sink, and spacious enclosed head. An overhead hatch and opening ports provide plenty of light and air.

Side decks lead forward on either side of the pilothouse to the foredeck, which is protected by a sturdy rail. The Danforth anchor perches on the bow pulpit, easily dropped and weighed by an electric windlass.

This Mathews 29 is loaded with a generator, Zipwake trim tabs, a bow thruster and a spotlight, just to name a few of the add-on accessories. She’s been recently repainted and she’s ready to splash in time for early-spring cruising.

Georgiana is a spry, elegant day cruiser, ideal for exploring the Bay in style. She’s easy to drive and doesn’t burden you with the maintenance of a bigger boat. Picture you and your crew entertaining guests on a sunset cruise, discovering new waterfront restaurants, or heading out on a fishing trip or weekend getaway—or simply poking about the Bay. With a draft of just over 2 feet, you can go just about anywhere your curiosity takes you.
