SLIDESHOW: Llama Rescued from Patuxent Floodwaters

Last weekend’s heavy rain pushed the Patuxent River up and over its banks, causing some dicey situations in western Howard County. But none was more memorable than the rescue of a llama, trapped in rising waters.

Flood warnings were in effect for most of the Baltimore-metro area Saturday night into Sunday morning. Howard County Fire EMS crews spent hours helping stranded drivers out of the high water on roads. But on Sunday, it was a farm animal, not a driver, who needed saving.

A llama was stranded in its pasture at Mink Hollow, a low-lying area on the Patuxent in Highland, Maryland.

Crews brought the llama to safety, at times having to coax the animal to wade through water up to its belly—water that was nearly waist-deep for the rescuers.
