What Makes it Unique
An easy way to get to Cape May is to head out from Lewes, Delaware, across the Ocean to this quaint seaside town.
The city is a National Historic Landmark and filled with colorful Victorian buildings, often referred to as “the painted ladies.” You can visit the Emlen Physick Estate, an 1879 Victorian home that is now a museum offering guided tours.
Historic inns, small boutiques and cozy restaurants dot the streets, including Washington Street Mall, which covers three blocks and is only open to pedestrians.
There’s plenty to do outdoors, with family-friendly beaches (just remember you’ll need a beach tag—$10 for a day pass—to access the beaches during the summer season) and Cape May Point State Park. The park features walking trails, bird watching, and is home to the Cape May Lighthouse.
The lighthouse was built in 1859 and is open to visitors. Climb up the 199 spiral steps to get a great view of the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware Bay, and, on clear days, Cape Henlopen in Delaware.
