The Anacostia River has been victim to sewage overflows for decades thanks to an antiquated combined sewer system. The massive tunnel system under Washington, D.C. got its first chance to show what it can do when inches of rain fell and flooded the Bay region.

As Cheryl Costello shows us, the tunnel system kept more than 250 million gallons of sewage out of the Anacostia River, and that’s cause for celebration. Watch below:
