This is J/Boats’ newest addition to the E Series of boats, designed to serve the performance cruising market. The group now includes the J/97E (31-feet), J/122E (40-feet), and this 36-footer. We had a chance to climb around the new J/112E at the Annapolis Show and found a lot to like.
At first glance, the boat appeared to be a simplified J/111, a 36-foot design that caught on quickly with the racing crowd after a 2010 launch. But no, as evident in the huge amount of space in the two-cabin layout below, this is something different. It’s deceptive.
From the dock it’s clear that the boat has more freeboard to create that interior space and also keep the family dryer under sail. Still, the boat appears to contain the J/Boat speed gene with a large composite wheel helm aft, retractable carbon fiber gennaker pole forward and sail controls arranged for easy trimming.
The boat features a non-overlapping sail plan with a 105-percent jib for shorthanded tacking. The power plant is a Volvo D1-30 saildrive diesel spinning a two-blade folding prop. There are four self-tailing winches two mainsheet, two primaries and two for halyards.
It’s all there for a suggested retail price a bit above $300,000.
We’re looking forward to sailing her and producing a full review in a future CBM issue. In the meantime you can have a look and maybe a sail through the Chesapeake J/Boat dealer, North Point Yacht Sales (www.northpointyachtsales.com).
