Volunteer, Get Front-Row Seat to Md. Fleet Week & Air Show
The Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show comes to Baltimore in less than a month, bringing the USAF Thunderbirds and other aircraft to the skies and U.S., Canadian, and British naval vessels to Charm City's waterfront. And one of the best ways to get a front-row seat to the action is to volunteer for the week's exciting events.
Organizers say, "Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show Baltimore celebrates the rich maritime traditions of the Chesapeake Bay and the contributions of Marylanders to the defense of the nation." In 2016, the last time the Fleet Week & Air Show came to the area, it drew more than 300,000 people.
Historical and modern-day aircraft will be on display at the Martin State Airport tarmac. Air Show Baltimore will feature flight demonstrations by the Thunderbirds, GEICO Skytypers, and others, on October 6 and 7.
Naval ships and other vessels big and small will be docked around the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, and Locust Point all week for visitors to board. There are activities at Fort McHenry, the Fleet Week Festival, and even a 5k run, new for this year.
Living Classrooms Foundation is looking for volunteers to assist with everything from guiding ship tours to chaperoning student field trips during Fleet Week.
Volunteers are needed from October 3rd-9th. There are opportunities for both groups and individuals to get involved; see the full list of volunteer opportunities here. To learn more about helping out, contact Erin Myers at email@example.com.
Fleet Week continues to strengthen Baltimore's reputation as a center of maritime history. It follows the success Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial commemorations in 2012 and 2014 as well as the Fleet Week and Air Show 2016.
"Baltimore has been chosen by the Navy to be one of the select cities to be an official Fleet Week destination so we are excited to highlight assets such as the Inner Harbor and the many historic attractions that are part of the fabric of our wonderful city,” said Chris Rowsom, executive director, Historic Ships in Baltimore.
