License-Free Fishing Days in Virginia and Maryland
Whether you're new to fishing or a seasoned pro, anglers of all levels are invited to fish license-free in Virginia and Maryland on select days in June and July.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) reports that the state's "Free Fishing Days" will be June 1, 2, and 3. For rod and reel fishing in freshwater or saltwater, no license will be required on those days. VDGIF encourages the public to visit its "Where to Fish" resource for more information about fishing locations throughout the state.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has declared June 2, June 9, and July 4 "Maryland's License Free Fishing Days."
Fishing and Boating Services Director David Blazer says the days are a good chance to test the angling waters, so to speak. “Free fishing days are the perfect opportunity to give the sport a try before deciding whether to get a license,” he says. “Fishing is open from the surf of the Atlantic Ocean to the mountain streams of Western Maryland.”
While there will be no need for a license, trout stamp, or registration on the free fishing days, DNR reminds anglers that they are still required to follow size and catch limits. The guide is available online and at local tackle shops.
