Norfolk Braces for Coastal Flooding
Norfolk, Virginia, an area already prone to coastal flooding, is taking steps to keep people safe and damage to a minimum, as Winter Storm Riley moves through the Bay region.
A Coastal Flood Warning goes into effect 7 a.m. Saturday and remains through 5 p.m. Sunday. The National Weather Service warns of moderate coastal flooding beginning with the Saturday morning high tide and continuing into Sunday. The Northeast North Carolina coast may even see major coastal flooding. NWS also predicts that breaking waves will result in significant beach erosion.
Homeowners and drivers should be on alert for rising water. If travel is necessary, do not try to drive through standing water.
The City of Norfolk is opening the York Street parking garage from 6 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Monday for residents to move their vehicles to dry ground. Old Dominion University will also open three garages to the general public at 6 p.m. Friday. Norfolk Public Schools will open school parking lots to the general public at 6 p.m. today. Vehicles must be removed by Monday morning.
