Annapolis Yacht Club has announced the first big event to be held at its new 10,000-square foot Sailing Center in Eastport. It’s a symposium for current and aspiring sailing race officials, and it’s bringing in some big names.

The very first AYC Race Officials Symposium will be held the weekend of February 23-24, 2019. Race officers, judges, and umpires— both novice and expert— are invited.

The president of US Sailing, Cory Sertl, is one of the keynote speakers participating in the symposium. She is a former Olympian and two-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year.

The most recognizable voice will be that of veteran TV broadcaster Tucker Thompson, who has both sailed in and hosted the America’s Cup.

“Race officials are the backbone of our sport. I spent much of my sailing career enjoying the benefits of talented race committees comprised of volunteers dedicated to improving our experience on the water,” Thompson said. “I’m glad to get an opportunity to give back to those folks. I’ll try to contribute lessons I’ve learned from watching race officials all over the world.”

Bruce Nairn and Ashley Love of T2PTV will also present about events promotion and media engagement.

Symposium organizer Taran Teague, a veteran race officer herself, expresses the importance of running regattas effectively.

“We anticipate competitors, coaches, and vendors will attend as we continue the trend of open communication and collaboration within our sport,” Teague said. “We will also discuss protest committees, weather information and – most importantly – safety.”

AYC is still looking for more race officials to be speakers at the symposium. If you’re an official or a sailor willing to share knowledge and experience in race officiating, you can submit an abstract for a 30 or 45-minute session.

The cost to attend the symposium is $75 for all sessions across both days, and includes continental breakfast and lunch both days, as well as a reception Saturday evening with snacks.
