Actress Kaiulani Lee is bringing her one-woman play about marine biologist Rachel Carson to Solomons this November, thanks to the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Chesapeake Biological Lab.
Lee, who is from Arlington, Virginia, has performed on Broadway, TV, and in movies like Cujo, Hush, and A Civil Action. She has also performed as Rachel Carson for the last 25 years. Her play A Sense of Wonder covers topics including women in academia and science, the environment and the oceans, and Carson’s struggles as a single parent and cancer survivor.
Carson’s book, Silent Spring, was published 55 years ago in Maryland, and has been credited with sparking the global environmental movement.
Lee will perform as Carson at the Solomons Holiday Inn Conference Center on November 4. Tickets are $30 for the play and reception, and $40 for the play, the reception, and an after-party with the actress.
The proceeds from the play will benefit graduate students at Chesapeake Biological Lab, who don’t pay tuition or living expenses while they pursue Masters and Doctoral degrees. Many of the staff and researchers say they were inspired by Rachel Carson, and the Lab’s research ship is named the R/V Rachel Carson.
