Unpublished Book on Schooner Sultana to be Released After 11 Year Wait

A book of drawings that depicts the schooner Sultana's construction from 1997 to 2001 has never seen the light of day because of a printing error during publication.

Artist Marc Castelli spent years at the Sultana Shipyard in Chestertown, drawing the 1768 reproduction schooner's construction. He collected them in a book called Building Sultana, and included recollections of the shipwrights and volunteers who built her.

It was supposed to be released in 2006, but a printing error was noticed at the last minute, and all 5,000 copies had to be destroyed. The publisher decided not to reprint the book.

Now, on the 20th anniversary of the ship's construction, the Sultana Education Foundation will publish a limited edition of 300 signed copies of Building Sultana. 20 additional "Founder's Editions," signed by both Castelli and Sultana's builder, John Swain, will also be for sale.

The proceeds from the book's sale will support Sultana Education Foundation scholarships for students from the Eastern Shore.

Sultana is offering underwriting purchases of the book for $250. Underwriters will receive a copy of the book and be recognized in the book itself. The deadline for reserving an underwriting copy is August 1, 2017.

Non-underwriting pre-orders of the book will be $150, beginning August 2. Books will also be for sale at Sultana's Downrigging Weekend in Chestertown on Saturday, October 28.
